A half hour of slack water

4 min read

Black rocks on body of water during daytime

Slack water is the short period at the turn of the tide when the current drops to nothing. On the Jæren coast it lasts between twenty and forty minutes.

One frame per tide

Each exposure in the series runs from two to six minutes. Setting up a large-format camera on wet rock takes most of the rest, so in practice there is one frame per tide and two tides a day.

Waiting as a method

Most of the work is checking tables, walking out and standing still. I made sixty-three exposures over a summer and the series has twelve.
